Dental Veneers Allendale Charter Twp, MI

Considering dental veneers? They are a great cosmetic dentistry treatment option used to restore and renew teeth that are in bad shape. However, many individuals are curious to know how long dental veneers last, which is a reasonable question, especially when considering different options.

The lifespan of dental veneers

Below is an overview of how long dental veneers typically last, including a few things that help make them last longer.

Porcelain versus composite resin dental veneers

There are two types of dental veneers that are used in cosmetic dentistry, including ones made of porcelain and composite resin. Both material choices are used in dentistry for various procedures ranging from dental crowns to dental fillings. In the case of dental veneers, porcelain is the most desired choice. Porcelain is durable and long-lasting, which provides the individual with at least 10-15 years when used for dental veneers.

Composite resin dental veneers are not nearly as durable or long-lasting as porcelain ones, however, they are a more affordable choice. Additionally, they can be made quicker. Composite dental veneers can be applied directly or indirectly, which means a dentist can apply composite resin dental veneers in one appointment or they can be custom-made by a dental lab. Whether indirect or direct, composite dental veneers typically last 5 to 10 years, depending on the care provided.

Traditional versus no-prep dental veneers

Outside of the material choices, there are two additional options for dental veneers, with the factors being how they are applied. Traditional dental veneers require an intense process of breaking down the tooth and etching the surface. However, while etching does help increase the longevity of the dental veneer, many individuals are not keen on the idea of having their enamel etched and removed, as it can cause sensitivity and discomfort. Traditional dental veneers that involve etching typically last upwards of 10 years.

No prep dental veneers are applied differently in the sense that there is not nearly as much etching or grinding of the natural tooth. While there is little to no discomfort with no prep dental veneers, the downside is that they may not last as long.

Factors

The average dental veneer will last anywhere from five to 15 years, depending on a few factors. Individuals that practice good oral hygiene on a daily basis will likely experience longer-lasting dental veneers. Additionally, those that avoid excessive sugar consumption, hard foods and smoking will likely have dental veneers that last on the longer side. Another contributing factor is routine dental appointments, which are necessary to ensure the health and longevity of dental veneers.
